Can you just stare at the waves for hours? Do you ever drive the ocean road rather than taking the most direct route just to get a glimpse of the water and if there are any waves? Find yourself looking away distractedly at the surf when having lunch at the beachside restaurant?

If you’ve answered yes to one or all of these then you’re one of us. You’re a Waxhead. A dedicated disciple of the Church of Surf, a card carrying club member of surf fraternity and paid up participant of the bombora brotherhood.

Maybe you’ve surfed all your life, maybe you’re a new recruit, maybe your membership lapsed and you’ve only recently rejoined the flock it doesn’t matter - welcome!

Perhaps like me you have struggled to fi nd a clan or a brand that understands you. The major surf brands are too young, too loud and way too cool. You know there is more to being a surfer than just wearing a logo. You know there is more to surfing than just bashing the lip.

And you know that even though your time surfi ng is a place of contemplation and catching the perfect wave is something close to a religious experience, that it is the chats you have out the back, the jokes you share with your mates and the bonds you make with your brothers in the water that are just as important.

Life wasn’t meant to be so serious. So lighten up. Enjoy the beauty of the ocean. Rejoice in the wonder of nature. Ask your mate about his operation then turn and take the next wave. After all, you didn’t paddle out there to watch him surf!
